In some ways, it’s rather ironic that I should be writing a food blog, as I waited until I was 40 to start cooking. Sure, I’d mastered the three B’s: baking, boiling and broiling, but was oft-considered a “kitchen phobic.” Yet, while not always a chef, I was always an eater, inherently knowing by looking at a recipe if I’d like the finished product.

Gilad Shalit, the Israeli soldier kidnapped in 2006 in a Hamas operation was released in October of 2011 in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. Shalit was able to reunite with his parents after five years in captivity. Doctors found him in good health but suffering from malnutrition and lack of exposure to the sun. It is not clear how long it will take Shalit to overcome the trauma of the past five years as captive of one of the most murderous terrorist organizations in the world. Meanwhile more than 450 Palestinians have already been transferred from Israeli prisons; more than 550 Palestinian prisoners will be released before the end of the year.
