Our Shlicha (Israeli emissary), Bar Sananes
Introducing Federation's Shlicha (Israeli emissary): Bar Sananes.
Bar continues the long history of Federation's Shlicha program that brings life in our Partnership2Gether region to our local community. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am 25 years old and now doing shlichut (service) in the greater Palm Beaches. I am looking forward to reaching out to the community and educating them on Israeli life, history and culture – creating the living bridge.
Much of my youth was spent volunteering with Tzofim, the Israeli Scouts. I started as a guide and later managed the educational component of the program. I served in the IDF for three years, culminating in my becoming an officer and overseeing 25 cadets in an officers’ training course.
I’m the oldest of three children. I have two brothers: Nir, 22 and Omer, 19. My family lives in Rosh Ha’Ayin, about 30 minutes east of Tel Aviv.
What are your first impressions of the greater Palm Beaches’ Jewish community?
In the short amount of time that I’ve been here, I’ve noticed that this community has a strong Jewish identity. It is interesting for me to see the effort and determination involved in preserving Jewish identity in the United States –in Israel, it is often taken for granted since it is the Jewish state. Religious observance is also different here than in Israel.
I look forward to reaching out to the diverse demographics of this community – from children to seniors – to help them gain insight into the realities of life in Israel.
Who would you like to meet – living or dead?
Golda Meir. She was a powerful and intelligent woman who appeals to Americans and Israelis alike. She made tough, insightful decisions during her time as Israel’s Prime Minister and exhibited remarkable poise during the Yom Kippur War. I truly admire her.
