Impact of Federation’s Annual Campaign
on the Crisis in Ukraine

It started in November with peaceful protests against strengthening political ties between Ukraine and Russia. It snowballed into violent confrontations between police and protestors, dozens of casualties, and scenes of destruction that have gripped the world. And it’s not over.

Although the estimated 300,000 Jewish residents in Kiev and throughout Ukraine are not currently targets of violence, the Jewish community is widely affected. Earlier this week, a Ukrainian synagogue was firebombed, and others in the Jewish community are at risk.

But Federation and our partner agencies, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI), are there. And thanks to Federation’s Annual Campaign, we’re ready.

“Palm Beach County’s generous and caring Jewish community enables Federation and our overseas partners to act quickly in emergencies,” said David Phillips, President & CEO of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. “From wars to acts of terror to natural disasters, our Annual Campaign allows us to do so much to save lives and alleviate suffering.”

In the midst of the violence, JDC’s emergency response network is ensuring continued home deliveries of food, medicine, heating and cooking fuel.  It's also offering sustained life-saving care at home for the elderly. JAFI has tapped its Emergency Assistance Fund, to bolster security at Ukraine’s many Jewish institutions, including synagogues, yeshivas and community centers.

“Central Kiev looks like a war zone - you see the actual fighting,” a local JDC worker told one newspaper. “Many are living in an area where there is violence and cannot leave home…I have seen people here supplying food to elderly clients in areas with snipers and Molotov cocktails.”

Unrestricted Annual Campaign gifts to Federation empower overseas partners in times of crisis, when immediate support means the difference between life and death. In times of stability, Federation builds global Jewish community by supporting the resurgence of Jewish life in historic Jewish communities like those in Ukraine and around the globe.

Federation works to enrich Jewish life, care for vulnerable populations and build global Jewish community. When a donor gives to Federation, he or she is investing in a network that works collaboratively to provide for the critical needs of our local and global community.
