Federation's JCRC and ADL's joint statement on Jupiter hate crime
Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) condemn the abhorrent murder of Onesimo Marcelino Lopez-Ramos, allegedly targeted by three individuals because he was Guatemalan.
We commend the Jupiter Police Department for their investigation of this homicide, arrest of the suspects, and efforts to have the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office prosecute the murder under Florida’s hate crime law. We furthermore stand in solidarity with the Guatemalan community and all who celebrate diversity and deplore this heinous crime.
According to police reports, the perpetrators were “hunting” for Guatemalans. One of the perpetrators told officers that he was seeking Guatemalans to rob and harass, and he used a derogatory term to describe them.
We ask that the entire community – leaders and residents – stand shoulder to shoulder to publicly condemn this apparent bias-motivated murder. It is critical that we come together to send a clear message that we will not tolerate such cowardly and un-American bigotry.
