Local Youth Named JTA Teen Hero
Lauren Maunus’ younger sister, Rachel, experienced a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction from a cashew just shy of her second birthday. Since then, Maunus has made it a priority to ensure her sister’s safety and the well-being of other people with allergies.
During her freshman year of high school, Maunus drafted a bill for her youth-in-government club that would require schools to post the top eight food allergens as well as ingredient information in their cafeterias.
Maunus has met with food service directors at Florida schools, attended county meetings, lobbied politicians and worked with legislative aides to raise awareness and increase education about food allergies.
Maunus is a member of Temple Beit HaYam in Stuart, Florida. She is an active member of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach’s Teen Initiative program and was a participant in last year’s Panim el Panim seminar in Washington, D.C.
