Overseas Impact Briefing with ENP & JAFI
Ethiopian National Project (ENP) and the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) came together to explain their impact over the past several months.
Israel’s government recognized ENP’s efforts as the premier initiative to benefit Ethiopian-Israeli schoolchildren, leading the Ministry of Finance to engage in a formal, multi-year commitment with the agency.
ENP’s newest initiative SPACE (School Performance and Community Empowerment) will be funded by a 50/50 partnership between the government of Israel and Jewish Federations of North America.
The agency plans to expand from 4,000 to 12,000 participants, reaching new age groups and focusing on schools in which Ethiopian-Israelis make up significant portions of the student body.
This focus on a critical mass of children is expected to turn around the fate of a community of which 49% live in poverty.
The ENP briefing was delivered by Director General Roni Akale and Director of International Relations Grace Rodnitzki.

We also learned about JAFI’s Project TEN (“Ten” or “תן“ is the Hebrew word for “Give”), in which Jewish young adults from around the world spend three months working and learning in vulnerable communities in Israel and worldwide.
“If not for MASA, I would not be working for Federation. My experiences in Israel made me decide to go into Jewish communal service instead of a secular public service program.” – Nir Buchler, MASA alumni and Federation Development officer.
MASA also offers a 6-10 week program with an equally moving experience: Onward Israel.
JAFI created Onward Israel to give graduates of Taglit-Birthright and other peer-trip programs an opportunity to build their resumes and explore Israel further.
MASA’s immersive and transformative programs have been so effective that over 1,000 graduates of the program are now in St. Petersburg, Russia working with the Jewish community.
JAFI also updated the group on the improving situation in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Attendees learned more about how Federation allocates funds to help communities all around the world.
The JAFI briefing was presented by Federation’s Israel & Global Initiatives department and included Dina Roemer, Director of MASA Resource Development and Senior FRD Executive for JAFI.
