Rabbi Leonid Feldman Becomes a Bar Mitzvah
Despite having conducted more than 100 Bar Mitzvah ceremonies during his 26-year career, former Soviet Refusenik-turned-Rabbi Leonid Feldman, never had a Bar Mitzvah...until recently.
Watch the ceremony on JLTV on June 4 at 10:30 p.m.
Rabbi Feldman, who leads Congregation Temple Beth El in West Palm Beach, immigrated to the United States in 1980 from Kishinev, Moldova.
He is the first and only Soviet-born Conservative Rabbi in America.
Feldman's story is typical of many Jews who were raised in the former Soviet Union after WWll. He grew up lacking knowledge of Judaism but became intrigued after reading Leon Uris' novel "Exodus". He became a passionate Zionist at the age of 21 and made his first application for a visa to immigrate.
