Federation Heartbroken over Charleston Massacre

Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County expresses our sincere condolences to the families of the victims of the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

We are heartbroken to have lost nine innocent souls targeted for no apparent reason other than the color of their skin.

This abhorrent massacre was committed by a hateful and severely misled white supremacist, demonstrating the destructive power of hateful speech, lies and irresponsible propaganda. The African-American community, nor any community, should fall victim to the hatred that today rapidly proliferates through easily-accessed and sophisticated digital channels.

Due to global threats against people of the Jewish faith, Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County and other Jewish organizations work in cooperation with law enforcement agencies to ensure the safety of our community. In particular, houses of worship should and must be places of sanctity and peace – safe havens for all, rather than targets of terror. We urge members of faith and ethnic communities to work in cooperation with law enforcement to prevent future heinous acts.

We stand united with Emanuel AME Church and the entire African-American Community – with whom the Jewish Federation has had a long, friendly relationship – against all forms of hatred, intolerance and bigotry. May the memories of those lost in Charleston be for a blessing.
