Anne & Sam Klein Jewish Coalition for Literacy Volunteers Make a Difference!

Love to Read?
Pay It Forward, as a Volunteer Reading Partner

The Anne & Sam Klein Jewish Coalition for Literacy, part of the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County’s Jewish Community Relations Council, recruits and trains volunteers to be reading partners in more than 40 area elementary public schools to improve students’ reading skills.

Following a three-and-a-half hour training, conducted by a reading specialist, volunteers devote a minimum of one hour per week -- at the school of their choice -- helping a child learn to read (and gain better reading comprehension).

Contact Sheri Siegal at 561-242-6694 or email to become a Reading Partner or for more information.

Schools currently in need of volunteers include:

  1. Acreage Pines Elementary, 14200 Orange Bolvd. in Loxahatchee
  2. Baron Elemetary, 1700 Barton Road in Lake Worth
  3. Jerry Thomas Elementary, 800 Maplewood Drive in Jupiter
  4. Cholee Lakes Elementary, 6680 Dillman Road in Greenacres

The following testimonials were provided to Dr. Colleen Iannitti, Principal at Acreage Pines Community Elementary, a newcomer to the Anne & Sam Klein Jewish Coalition for Literacy, by her staff:

“My three students love working with their very own volunteer, who comes to see them on Wednesdays. They told me that they worked on readers’ theater and discussed a short story that included Turkey (the country). She was able to share her experiences of riding on a real camel, which was very impressive to the three students who have never left the state of Florida!

“I think the program is a wonderful opportunity for adults to help out in the community. (Our volunteer) is dedicated and really in-tune with the children she works with. She sees the same behaviors that I do. The children really enjoy reading with her, and working with her. One student did so well I had to stop him from seeing her, much to his disappointment! The volunteer made time for that student to have a ‘fun’ read-along together; he was thrilled that she did that with him. I thank her each week when she is ready to leave and appreciate the time she devotes to my class”
