Faces of Funding
Throughout the year, around our community and around the world, Federation funds the capacity for its partner agencies to provide food, shelter, medicine, emergency assistance, counseling, educational opportunities and support to the most vulnerable among us. Despite increased costs and escalating demand, Federation and its partner agencies continue to do more with fewer resources. Meet some of the individuals we've helped here:
Ken* is a successful real estate developer who found himself out of work and unemployed. Ken began attending Federation-funded programs designed specifically for unemployed businessmen and quickly found his place.
“You realize that you’re in good company with other very smart, accomplished, successful businessmen who have found themselves out of luck during these hard times,” he said. More optimistic about the future, Ken continued, “Federation kept me connected with other positive, like-minded Jewish people. It just makes you feel like you’re not alone.”
Mina* is an 85-year-old woman living alone in St. Petersburg, Russia. Thanks to Federation-funded programs, Mina is able to pay for her food with a pre-paid card provided by Hesed. Hesed is a network of Jewish social service agencies that represent a lifeline for Jewish people throughout the former Soviet Union. The organization also provides help with laundry, cleaning and transportation for errands and social activities. “It would be impossible for us to live without this support,” Mina said.
Lauren* is a Jewish young woman who lives with her husband Mike* and their daughter Madeline*. Mike, however, is not Jewish. “My concern was how we are going to raise our child Jewishly when I needed to educate my child as well as my husband,” Lauren said. “Mike didn’t really understand that it’s not just a religion.”
Enter the PJ Library for the Greater Palm Beaches, part of a national program that delivers Jewish-themed picture books to subscribers’ homes each month. “It’s a beautiful introduction for my child and husband to Judaism,” Lauren said.
